When play is suspended at a golf tournament due to lightening in the area, as has happened at The Masters today, what happens to the spectators? How can they shelter safely?

They may just wait for it darkening.

For many (most?) people, that's likely to mean simply heading to their cars which, as they form Faraday cages, are totally safe places - as Richard Hammond could well tell you! (Move the time slider to 3 mins 30 seconds):

I mind on seeing a documentary about electricity a good few year ago.

They did the same thing with a car. The power company in the UK said it would be safe but wouldn't let it be tested so they had to travel to Europe and use a stunt driver.

He drove the car around several times and each time it was struck, the only change was the rear wiper making a sweep.

The late great Lee Trevino said, in the likelihood of a lightning storm, go to the highest open space nearby, take out your 1 iron and hold it up as high as you can. You'll be perfectly safe. Even God can't hit a 1 iron.
