Some ABers may remember those words around a lapel badge with an image of a smiling sun in the centre.
Germany announced today that it had decommissioned the last 3 of its nuclear plants. With gas supplies from Russia severely limited they'll have to turn to coal to generate much of their electricity.
I think they're mistaken in this, as we were when we sported those badges so long ago.
Agree, or no?
//God forbid we should leave fewer problems for our children and grandchildren.//
Depends what you mean by "problems" and how serious you view each of them. If you're happy to allow future generations to worry about having enough energy available to live a reasonably comfortable life and to be able to get around to indulge in everyday activities, then go right ahead - support the closure of all the nuclear, coal and gas-fired power stations and instead rely on intermittent and unreliable wind and solar generation. I'm sure future generations will be eternally grateful that they have to worry about how they will heat and light their homes whilst being confined to the area they can walk or cycle to.
Nuclear is a reliable and safe form of energy generation that does not involve carbon emissions… the waste involved is in modern plants really quite small..
nuclear is not sustainable long term due to the high maintenance costs but it is an absolutely essential stopgap in the period when renewable sources of energy are being perfected… germany have made a very unwise decision in my view
Poor old Angela Merkel ( nuclear chemist before chancellor) who looked at Russia in 1989 and said - "foo-dange!". This means "we must trade with Russia and show them what economic progress cane mean for the people!" She later said - "I have been wrong for twenty y"
whoops reader! and in a Judge Judy voice, repeat " that's long long time to be wrong!"
Any way, she started it. Lorra lorra rejigging needed as a result of Russian aggression. Lucky we arent further east innit !
germany have made a very unwise decision in my view
it seemed OK with the 'facts/factoids' at the time
I felt sorry for Merkel. She has been turned down for the Gt German Medal, as a result. Even Fatty Kohl got that - He brought down the Berlin Wall. He then was not invited back for the 10th celebrations because he was by then a non-person. Think SNP and fingers in the till. - official term was party funding irregularities
This thread prompted me to go rummaging in my various boxes and tins of old stuff. What do you know, I found a battered old original badge, the atomkraft version. Can’t remember where I got it. I was never a protester at the time, and I went to work with pwr and agcr as a naval engineer officer. Yes memory gets tricky, but I recollect an old girlfriend (Marie?), it was over 50years ago) who was into all that. Perhaps it came to me that way. Should I put it on eBay and make a killing?
Btw, if there are any ladies of a certain age on AB, called Marie , who were around Glasgow 50 years ago, who still have long legs and a fiery temper, than I have no recollection and I deny everything!
