Two Way Family Favourites

Who remembers listening to this radio programme at noon on a Sunday?
Messages were passed from servicemen in British Honduras, Hong Kong, Akrotiri, to families back home.
Any other overseas territories come to mind?

Oh yes, I remember it well, Cliff Michelmore and Jean Metcalfe, I think. We also listened to Round the Horne and the The Navy Lark, not sure they were both on a Sunday.

We had a relative I think in the army in Germany who mentioned our family on one show.

Sunday lunchtime if I remember correctly. Did they cover Gibraltar too, can't recall but we later lived there and often sat in the studio of BFBS during broadcasts. One request was from a nurse for another nurse, they apparently weren't the best of friends, however one made a request because the other now had a very bad cold, it was to remind her of how she got the cold , Blanket On The Ground!

Yes I did and it was where I first heard Love Me Do by the Beatles- probably requested by someone based in Germany. I also listened to the Navy Lark and Round The Horne, both absolutely brilliant

Billy Cotton's Band show featured amongst the sunday lunch listening.
Two way family Favourites always hold a bad memory for me.
I was about 8 years old and Jean presented Elvis singing Jailhouse Rock to some BFPO Germany. My father ,at the end of the table started his usual tut tutting and 'jeez do people get paid for singing this rubbish' sort of diatribe.
I innocently said, 'Some people enjoy this sort of music Dad'
Next thing I knew I was on the floor counting all the stars in the galaxy. An open palmed mighty slap around my ear. My elder sister burst into tears and mum said quite timidly,'that was a bit harsh Charles'

I hated those slaps. Sure it's why I lost my hearing later in life.
I looked forward to Round the Horn and Ramblin Sid Rumpo though. It lightened the atmosphere a little

B.A.O.R. was a regular receiver of messages. Yes, it was always on on Sundays.

Wonderfully shows on the radio at lunchtimes. We never thought that they would end. Sadly, they did. One or two decent ones left.
