Is there any way of verifying a car's mileage if it doesn't have a stack of old MOT's?

If the car has been serviced or repaired at a main dealer records including mileage are usually stored on their computer, I don't know if they would release this information if you do not own the car.
The only other detective work you can do is check the service history book. If it doesn't have one..that's a bit iffy anyway. Physical wear and tear indicates usage. I saw a car where the leather seats were cracking, steering wheel top was shiney and masses of stone chipping..mileage?...34,000....mmmm honest.

DVLA have a voluntary system when the car is taxed they may give you some idea.
I believe if a vehicle has been clocked that the reading sometimes appears distorted and not a level set of digits
