Well, it's what Jesus would want, innit.

Naomi. I think that Jesus wasn't nice to his family. But he did say some things that went against the grain of following the strict religious rules of the time. But none of that made later christians more charitable. They did burn people at the stake etc and so on. I don't think that J advocated that sort of thing.
I dont know where you get the idea Jesus wasn't nice to his family. From what I read He respected His family. Jesus's greatest anger was directed at the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of His day, in particular the Pharasees
Don't forget the money changers. He threw a strop with them also.
I don't try to speak for Jesus, but I'm fairly sure that He would not speak in the words of the Arch.B. of C.. He was clear sighted.

Re: OP. Arch-B. Welby - I resigned once from our P.C.C. over his endorsement of lockdown and closing churches. I thought he was wrong. I returned a few months ago, having decided that I cared more about my 'patch' than about distant ramblings. I am happy to tell anyone, including our vicar, that I think Welby, for all his good qualities, is simply well out of touch. He is hurting local churches, people have already spoken to me about it and I can't defend him. I think he's wrong, but shall ignore him on this.

Probably because I had a Methodist mother, but I don't have total faith in the pronunciations of Bishops and Archbishops. I do care about our local church and its people and the good we can do together.
A brilliant idea, they have plenty of churches in France for them.
Atheist, Jesus wasn’t a Christian - and I wasn’t talking about his family.
jc was not nice to his family ehh, so he was a very naughty boy, blessed are the cheese makers..
By endorsing the continual flow of illegal immigrants into Britain, Welby is saying that God approves of the despicable trade of people- smugglers.
I'll say it once again; there is no deterrent for illegal immigrants, so they will keep coming. Introduce a strong deterrent, then we might get somewhere.
We have the deterrent - immediate removal to Rwanda. Will it be implemented? Don't hold your breath.
Then I wouldn't call it a deterrent.
If we don't do it, it's not a deterrent, but if we do it would be.
"If we don't do it, it's not a deterrent, but if we do it would be."

Correct, as the Republic of Ireland have recently found out!
The republic of Ireland, under the very expensive EU dictatorship, have had to allow 1000's of African male migrants to its population, all over.

Mainly local women protest, they ask their Gov' where will they be housed and why are they told they will get houses above the 12,000 homeless Irish people, the weak Gov just calls them far-right. The weak left media only interview well-off rich people but refuse to answer the simple question of the ordinary residents.

As the old saying goes, don't mess with the (very attractive) Irish girls.
Benedict Spence’s riposte to the Archbishop of Canterbury condemning the Rwanda migrant plan as “ungodly”….

“This is unfair given that God deported the first two people from the garden of Eden fairly sharpishly. He didn’t have to deal with the House of Lords or the ECHR.”

Well said that man! :0)
//We have the deterrent - immediate removal to Rwanda.//

No really. If it ever gets off the ground (a very big “if”) the scheme has the capacity for 1,000 people. In the six months ending December 31st 2022 there were 33,000 “small boat” arrivals - a rate that is set to be exceeded this year. So the Rwanda scheme will cater for about five or six days arrivals (not counting, of course, the number that will be offset by the UK’s agreement to take “a number” (unspecified) of Rwanda’s “most vulnerable” refugees.

So even if this scheme gets going, it will quickly be filled and the chances of anybody being deported to Rwanda will soon become minimal.
NJ, Rwanda is seen as a deterrent. Is custodial sentencing not a deterrent to criminal activity? Would removing the deterrent not lead to an increase in crime?

The Australians virtually stopped all illegal immigrants in boats by publicising the fact that it was useless trying, because they would be immediately deported & those that did try, were.
