Try phoning them and asking

not quite the answer i was looking for.

Try doing a search for the number on the Internet, there may be the slightest chance that they've posted their details on line.

Failing that, I believe there is a CD-Rom you can buy (about 40?) which contains all the UK phonebook entries; it'll probably have a reverse search facility.

If you only have their number, maybe they dont want you to have their address, just a thought, I'm not trying to be mean honestly :)

its ok :) i dont want to do anything with their address. i just keep getting prank phone calls of this number and wish to see if its anyone i know. or where they are coming from.
it is a nuisance.  We ahd this psychotic alcoholic r sole who kept phoning us at our new house, insisting eh speak with Wilma.  We knew the previosu owners of our hosue, and none of them were called Wilma.  We tried to be polite, but to no avail, on a couple of occasions he'd get quite angry.  Tried Bt...no help whatsoever, tho they very kindly offered to put a barr on that number dialling our home, for a (not ) very reasonable monthly fee of course!  In the end we paid it, just to get rid of the calls.  Thankfully after the 3mnth period was up, he seemed to have got the message.  If you really think it's someone you know, then just let it be known to all and sundry that these calls are annoying or upsetting you, and if they don't stop, you'll be forced to contact the police, as you have the phone number from which the calls are being made.   Hopefully if it's soemone you know, they'll have the sense to stop.  Good luck. xx
ps I should just add that I wasn't being unkind about our nuisance caller, he actually told us he was psychotic and alcoholic (tho I interpreted the r-sole bit!!)

If you cant beat them join them - try phoning at 3 in the morning and asking them for Wilma. You wont get into bother cos you have their number and all BT have to do is check their a/c and see how often they have called you.

Or better still tell them they have won a holiday and need their address for confirmation to be sent to.Might be better getting a pal to do it and withhold number (in case they recognise your voice).

Sorry Wilma was name in another post - got carried away!!
I know there is a new service called phone track on 192.com but it is for mobiles only with consenting number holders.  Try the electoral roll records on there for the area the code is from, you may just spot it but you could be along time doing it, still, keep you busy!
Alternatively, give me the number and I will ring him and tell him he has an appointment at the hospital but we have lost his postcode but pretend he is the wrong person i want and ask him for his surname, that way you find his street but he doesn't think he is giving much away.

Personally I would contact BT.

I had a similar problem some years back and they were very helpful.  They will contact your local Police who will pay a visit to this individual and then will meet with you but dont expect them to tell you who they are because they wont unless like me you know the Police man who gave clues!

There is a website http://www.brainstorm.co.uk/uk_std_code_search.htm which if you input the first part of the dialling code it will list the areas based on the next part of the number (if you get my drift!)  It may well narrow down the area or town for you.

Simple but depressing answer, this facility is available online (and often free) for the USA, but apparently illegal for the UK (not that they could stop it being set up overseas. Either way, I haven't come across anyone who's dared to do this for UK numbers but the Infodisk Pro will do it if you pay for the CD. This begs the question why it's not available online again... round in circles...
I don't mean to imply that any of you people have suspicious motives for wanting to find the address/name of a person,( we have all been on the reciving end of prank callers) for whom you have a phone number, but after reading these answers, I became aware just how dangerous this could be. If we could simply gain info, such as home addresses etc, can you imagine the consequences and effects? Makes me shiver just thinking about it.
Sorry that should be receiving
get a kiddies whistle and blow as hard as you can down the line when they ring.
Just a couple of this... Buddy mentioned contacting BT and finding how many times they called you... BT won't divulge itemised call details to anyone apart from the account holder even if they are making nusiance calls. If the prank calls turn to malicious calls then it will become a police matter and they have their own liaisons with BT security to deal with this (I've worked for BT for a number of years!!)

Also, I wouldn't recommend Ward-Minter's suggestion of blowing a whistle as you couldn't 100% guarantee it's the caller! Imagine damaging a poor relative's ear because they took a few seconds to say "Hello"...

BT do offer a service called "Choose to refuse" which you can have free for a month and you can block numbers *even if* they've been withheld...
