Two important things. First, how many generations are remembered in the society? Average is 3-4. Generation is considered a period of 25-30 years, so take any migrants who arrived to other country. In 75-100 years no one remembers where your ancestors actually came from.
Another issue is bond to the land. In case of slavery, one did not have any property therefore the only way to get bonded to some land is by cemetary. Sounds controversial, but if you visit your grand-grand-mothers grave, you may think that her burial place is actually your motherland.
Even if we speak not about slaves, Europe has always been moving in the last 10 000 years. One day our grand-grand-grand-children may ask exactly the same questions ;)
