If you have a shed or garage then that is the place to keep onions, preferably in some sort of non plastic container that will let the air circulate. If you are only talking small quantities, then a paper bag or a basket would be my suggestion, in a cupboard, not too hot. You can get cloth bags for keeping onions and potatoes (not together I add!) that can be hung up.
So, it depends on your circumstances as much as anything, but I would avoid the fridge!

if you store anything, store it in a similar way to how it is kept in the supermarket display
for as long back as i can remember, eggs have been kept on the shelf, ambient! but at home many people insist on keeping them in the fridge..
onions are kept at room temp in the shop.. so in anything that isnt going to sweat or damage them in the home should be fine... i wouldnt personally keep them in the fridge, unless you cut one and have some remaining that you wish to use later.
