Good morning, after sailing through a very smooth Spectator, this one takes me through some choppy waters. Some help would be appreciated for the following. Thanks in advance!

(Answers to five clues consisting of wordplay only are thematically connected to their entries. The wordplay part of every other clue includes an additional letter which must be removed prior to solving ( always leaving real words ). In clue order, these letters provide a refrain ( with one variant spelling ) of the reporters of this ACTION-PACKED sequence of events, who must also be completed ( sharing a single letter ). Numbers in brackets relate to entries. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended. )

10a Journalist ends rioting in street ( 11) : ?I?????????
14a Gain attention anew ( 4 ) : ?O??
23a Charioteer has died in Scottish river ( 7 ) : ?L??I??
37a The RAF developed hot wing for domestic duty ( 11 ) : ???R???????

6d Examination of fluid by Powis in exchange ( 6 ) : ????S?
8d Harsh record for the chopping block ( 7 ) : ??P?I??
11d Sea duty abandoned ( 11 ) : ?A?S????E
25d Disgorges East Lothian brants obscuring sun ( 7 ) : ??E???

Yes Nac, I thought it was a very good puzzle, a little on the easy side once you understood the theme, but of course it was done Sunday evening over here, straight after the AZED which I thought was also easier than normal. I normally leave the EV until Monday morning, but actually finished this one on Sunday.
Thanks for that, JJ - I thought you were maybe away from Chambers(as happens to me sometimes), I didn't realise you didn't have one. You manage very well without it!
JJ, thanks for your crossword review. I like tackling EV on Sundays - I'd worry that I'd keep it until Monday and then be disappointed for one reason or another ( the theme not suiting me, the puzzle being too easy, too difficult) ! I think last week's EV was so good, so clever, that this one seemed ... a bit tame.
PS I enjoyed Azed too. It looked daunting initially, but was doable.

Thanks, JJ109, I think I'm gradually coming to terms with the EV.
I'm now reviewing all the answers - a precious learning exercise for me.
Would you kindly provide the letters for the top left corner and the
bottom so that I might fully understand this one?
F top and N bottom

Then read diagonally top left to bottom right
Matakari, in many thematic puzzles, the diagonals can be a source of treasure - worth noting for the future?
Question Author
Many thanks, JJ109 and NACW! I've been introduced to a certain Donna FW and wonder what role she plays in this puzzle. In any case I have encountered the use of the diagonals in the monthly Chemistry World Wordoku.
Thanks, Matakari. I don't really get your comment, joke about Donna FW? I'm sure you know the theme is F... S...,but I feel obliged to check!

Question Author
It was not meant to be a joke, NACW! When I checked my diagonal from top left to bottom, I got Flanders Wann with middle name Donna, so I was wondering...
Matakari, I feel the proverb, 'You can lead a horse to water...' kicking in! As you had the refrain, and the five thematic answers, it was only a tiny step further to uncover the last step. I did worry a little when you, twice, asked for the blank letters.

PS As the preamble says, the names 'share a single letters' - that is the 'S'.
