The future might look better if there were a few younger players in the team. England have always been very hesitant to introduce young players into the national sides. If, say, there's a highly-talented 16-year-old in India or Pakistan, they're likely to be playing international cricket by the age of 18. However England rarely select anyone under 25 to play for their country.
There were only three players under 30 years old in the England team at the Oval. Broad (37) and Moeen (36) have already announced their retirements, with Anderson (41) unlikely to be playing for much longer. Woakes (34), Bairstow (33), Wood (33), Root (32) and Stokes (32) have all probably got a few years left to go yet but I'd prefer to see some younger players getting into the squad soon.
