Good evening, a tricky puzzle to keep me thinking while I await
the Spectator! I’ve got quite a few of the Down clues from which,
I assume, no extra words must be removed like for the 20 across clues.
Some help for the following would be appreciated to see if I’m on the
right track. Thanks in advance!

( Twenty across clues contain an extra word which must be removed before solving. Ten of these extra words contain a particular pattern of letters, with a different example in each. Several more examples of the pattern occur in clue answers. Solvers must introduce eight more examples (ie, different to those in extra words and answers) of the pattern into the perimeter by changing letters in some cells. All resulting new entries are real words, including a comparative form and an abbreviation. )

1a Cafe right out of pickled mushroom spread (7): MO?M???
6a Duke leaving country after one took vulgar picture (6): ?B?S??
16a Base probing sailors' careers (5) : SEAR?
19a Extremely slack Welsh alumni are lost causes (6): ?REA??
19d Amid conflict in grammar school, new threats (8): ?????LA?

Many thanks, Bobbinwales and NACW, my grid is now full
and I,ve gained a lot from the exercise. The tricky part for me now
is to determine the change of letters around the perimeter since I
solved some clues without removing the extra word. I'm at a loss
as to how to what letters to change. Please advise.
Matakari, earlier in the thread there's a list of which entries need changing, and there's also very helpful information on the nature of what's to be done. With all that, I'm not sure what 'please advise' means. Have you got the theme, are you wanting a list of the finished entries? I
Matakari, having glanced through this thread, quite a few of the extra words have been given - and you should spot what's common about each of those (remembering there's more than one 'variety').
Matakari, I hope you managed to get the thematic element done. That was the best part of the puzzle for me!
Today's EV is extremely Matakari friendly.

Good day, NACW, after a pretty smooth session with the Sunday Times Crossword and Mephisto, I returned to “Right is Wrong”, but the theme eludes me. I’ve got snippets of what is required, but there is still a lot to do as I’ve solved without removing some words. Removing words and finding extra letters has always been my weakest area! I would be happy to have the list and the words to be changed. And many thanks for alerting me about this week’s EV which I’ll have a look at later today.

Here is where I have reached with Flowerman:

PERIMETER ANSWERS:

1a HOUMMOS ( No change )
6A IDEATE
12d MISREADS ( No change )
42d AIRS to A.Q.P.S
1d HALT
19d WARNINGS
47a RESCUE ( 2 changes )
48a UNHANDS ( 2 changes )

WHERE IS THE CHANGE OF LETTERS?
LIST OF 10 EXTRA WORDS WITH PARTICULAR PATTERN:

You're looking for alphabetical pairs in the clues, but they run backwards - so 'airs' becoming aQPs accounts for the QP.
For 19d the change of two letters (late on in the alphabet) will give you birds.
Matakari, the 'list of words to be changed' had already been given, so I was surprised ypu asked for that! I hope it'll be full steam ahead for you now.

PS There are extra words in this week's EV, but I don't think you'll have any problems with those.
All of the removed words have either a pair going forwards or a pair going backwards - but remember, 'ri[gh]t is wrONg' (because 'wrONg' has them reading the correct way/ie backwards, for this crossword).
Between the changes in the grid and the extra words you should have all 13 backwards pairs.
