I started a new twitter account & it said i could not message anyone who does not follow me, unless i was verified. - or after more usage.

I started to use the account as usual & after a few weeks, i got a message saying they were now sure i was a real person & had interacted enough to have earned the right to inbox anyone, whether they follow me or not.

However, when i try to, it still says i cant as im not verified.

I also cannot find the message that showed up telling me i was now allowed

Any ideas what i can do?

thanks :)

Pedantic note: It's no longer 'Twitter'; it's now 'X'.

Possibly relevant quote:
"If you are sending Direct Messages to accounts that do not follow you, you may need to verify your phone number".

So, have you done that?

thanks

no, it hasnt asked me to. it just said i was now allowed to send inboxed - i couldnt send any at first (i dont think, i didnt really try many)
I've been with Twitter/X for years and if I try to DM somebody who doesn't follow me I just see 'this person can't be messaged'.

i dont want to put my number on there, every time ive ever put my number online - even seemingly reputable places i suddenly get loads of spam calls.
Thanks tho

I discovered there is a new setting on Twitter that default is only messages from verified users ... you have to go & change it to accept msgs from anyone.
sneaky to get ppl to think they need to get verified.

I have messaged non followers before this absolutely fine though
