Smartphone Phantom Messages

I hear the signal of an incoming message but there is nothing to see.
Other messages are coming in as usual - any ideas?

It might well be a notification of something other than a message. (I've sometimes been left confused by what appears to be the sound of an incoming email or message, only to find that there's nothing there when I look).

Assuming that you're using an Android phone, pull down from the top on its home screen. That will show any hidden notifications. (e.g. ones coming from the BBC Sounds app or whatever else you've got on your phone). It might well be those notifications that you've been hearing.

I think you're both right : there was a spam email lurking and I see that Youtube have been sending stuff I didn't think I'd asked for :-))
