The Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar. Pope Gregory XIII had calculated that we were in fact wrong with having a leap year every 4 years and instead proposed that adding a day every 4 years was over correcting thus he suggested that we should omit years that end in 00 unless the year is divisible by 400. The new calendar was first created in 1582 but not adopted in UK until 1752 when the error amounted to 11 days. So in September of that year the 13th follows the 3rd. More interesting fallout later......

It caused protests in Russia and elsewhere as people demanded they be given their “missing days” back!

Mind you today some people complain that GMT has robbed them of an hour of daylight ;-)

Yes ich, many people thought that they'd been deducted from their lives. Although another effect was that businesses demanded a full accounting year so they had to move the end of the financial year from March 25th (lady day (QD)) to April 6th where it's been ever since.
I can vaguely remember Pope Pirelli introduced his calendar in 1964.

Not sure of the actual date though ;o)
