I bought a a pair of shoes yesterday for £70. (equiv.) and was asked if I would like to have a bag in which to put them, to which I said, yes please. I was then charged 20p (equiv.) for a paper carrier bag on which was emblazoned in large letters; 'I'm shopping Quick at Quick Shoe' (trans.)

So I then walked around the town advertising their shop & having paid them for the privilege to do so.

Khandro. Whenever I am asked if I would like a bag, I always ask if it's free.
If I can manage without, I will, but if I had spent £70, as you did, I would pull them up about that and say, 'Do you really expect me to pay for a bag when I've just spent £70?'
I would kick up such a fuss, they would give me the bag just to get me out of the shop.

No it's not hard - it's inconvenient. I rarely shop unexpectedly and when I do it's usually when I'm away somewhere. Shops in this country are supposed to be struggling. The one advantage they have over online suppliers is customer service and part of that is making life easier and more convenient for their customers. They're not doing that if they're making it difficult for customers to take their goods away, or by making a petty charge for a paper bag. There's no way I'm roaming around with a shopping bag in my pocket on the faint off chance that I might see something that catches my eye and if it's not convenient to buy it in a shop I'll simply go online. I won't need a bag then and I'll listen with added interest to the High Street retailers who complain that they cannot compete with online competition.

NJ; Why would you not carry round a small foldable bag in your pocket? You probably carry a handkerchief, keys, wallet, phone, and other small things for your convenience. I mean, the small foldable bag is for your own benefit, not pandering to some higher power. You sound a little bit grumpy for the sake of it.

Can't understand anyone having a problem having a bag, just in case. Mr Bean carries everything he needs to make a sandwich, even the salt and pepper, sometimes a lettuce.

Many things have I been called, but a 'snowflake' is a first, & of course it would have to be right here (where else?) on AB.

I believe there are two great guardians of the world Atheist; self-respect and decorum.
The former, a proper sense of one's own dignity and the latter, the appropriateness of behavior or conduct.

I suggest, that in a public place such as a store, removal of an old disgusting, crumpled paper bag from the interior of one's vestments and unfolding it to the possible bewilderment of onlookers, in which to place a pair of newly purchased shoes is an affront of both.

If that makes me a 'snowflake', so be it. :0)

I’m with NJ - it seems odd to me why I’d carry a bag on the off chance I may buy something.

I don’t carry a manbag, so I’d have to have a bag in the pocket of my jeans…and that’s just a bit weird.

perhaps it is a bloke thing then.
I know i say this a lot, but it's just the way the world works now, and it's natural as you get older you don't like it (things were better back in your day etc)
i remember my grandma 40 odd years ago being cross when her local grocer's shop closed (the sort where you asked the people behind the counter to get you a 1/4 of breaded ham, 2 tins of soup and a loaf and they passed them across the counter to you), a bit like you are now cross shopping has changed again.
Incidentally, my gran always had a reuseable bag or basket with her as shop didnt give you bags in those dys!

I remember a few years back Eamonn Holmes telling how he spent about £1,000 in a computer shop. They asked if he wanted a bag. Yes - that will be 20p. He didn't have any money on him so he had to carry all the boxes of his purchases. You would have thought having spent all that money, they could have given him a bag - even if the salesperson put the 20p in the till himself, he would have made enough commission on the sale you would have thought.

I completely agree bednobs. If I had a spur of the moment purchase I’d pay for a bag, and let’s face it, 30p is nothing.

I just find it weird that some people find it weird why I wouldn’t have a bag in my jeans.
