You wouldn't have to worry about anyone's opinion of your behaviour.

But people are fickle - friends one moment and enemies the next - so regardless of what others think, being true to yourself is far more important.
Not caring about how other people thought of us is not due to conscience.
Many people do things because they have a conscience but are publicly derided for doing that thing.
I try to 'do the right thing' so that I can live without myself and not be eaten up by guilt; I try to be kind to other people because I don't want to upset them unnecessarily.
