Does anyone know how much this old classic car might be worth as a non-runner. It needs a new carburettor and it smokes a lot so probably also the valves or the head-gaskett. Quite a bit of rust under wheel rims too. If I get it running and tidied up what might it be worth? I am trying to decide whether to spend money on it or get it crushed. Many thanks.

You could perhaps get a hint by running it through webuyanycar and motorway

My mate had one from new. That and a Mitsubishi Starion Turbo.

He loves dogs though. ☺

My initial reaction was - don't bother. But, having watched "Bangers and Cash" on Yesterday TV, I'm thinking differently.

Seemingly old wrecks that haven't run for decades are sold, done up properly and sell for many thousands. The company is Mathewsons in Thornton-le-dale - they're always on the lookout for stuff.

Many do sell for thousands but they often don't even manage to break even cash-wise.

Big fan of Sarah though. ☺

Sarah's now at Evoke Classics:

Aye, that's why I check the episode number before watching. 😁

I doubt if it is worth you getting it up and running with an MOT unless you are very capable of doing the work yourself. However it could possibly be worth putting an honest description on eBay and see if anyone fancies the project.

Personally I think I would see how much a scrappie would give me to take it away. Much easier.

Theres always going to be an interest in cars this age but without knowing a bit more its hard to answer your question fully. I would have a look at the Mk1 scirocco owners club to get some idea.

Apart from the rust and the carb is the rest ok - interior etc paintwork? Is it a GLS or Gti? Mileage?

Some people buy cars this age purely because they are tax and MOT free.

stick a picture of it on here and we can all have a look.

If you can't drive the car to the WeBuyAnyCar location they certainly won't come to you.

Mathewsons will quickly tell you if it's a car they'd be interested in auctioning - believe it or not they are very fussy.  Drop them an email with photos https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/how-to-sell/

Talking of Bangers & Cash (the tv show about Mathewson's) - does anyone remember the Mini that was so rotten it had to be put on a pallet so it could be lifted by forktruck?  That was a shocker, but it made a shockingly high price.

Sorry for this interlude, as you were 😊

I've just had a scout round and the GT 1980 Scirocco is selling for very good money - restored.

Don't be in a rush to send it to the scrapper.

I'm sure someone will be interested, especially as it doesn't need an MoT

Nor tax but it must still be roadworthy.

Maybe you could ask Mike Brewer (of Wheeler Dealers) if they’d like to make a restoration project of it – although I’ve noticed they have a tendency to reject rust-buckets.

How to I add pictures? It came with a brand new nearside wing when I bought it and the 'mechanic' who has now spent a year pretending to repair it has at least replaced that wing. That was the only visible rust (above nearside indicator). There is rust visible along the rims under the doors. No idea how much more there is but one thing I know. Squitty - it's a GLS. What does that mean and is it better than or less wanted than GTi? (Apologies for total car ignorance!). I tried those websites Hopkirk but it was too old. I have emailed Mathewsons, Barry 1010. Wheeler Dealers seems to be a TV programme according to Google. Do you have an email for Mike Brewer, Hymie? I will look up Evoke Classics tomorrow, Brainiac. Many thanks for all your answers and suggestions. I will report back if I make any progress.
