A memory from school days is that mungoes and shoddies were cheap cloths made from recycled cloth ie, the old cloth was shedded and then re-spun and rewoven into mungoes and shoddies. I vaguely remember that one was basically woollen and the other basically cotton - no man-made fibres in those days..
