Noise from domestic plumbing system

Any advice please, I am getting desperate. My water pipes make some extraordinary noises. When running hot water, they emit a loud wailing sound, often continuing long after the tap has been closed. When using the washing machine or dishwasher (cold only) a loud knocking noise is made. This knocking sometimes happens when there is no water running. The house is about 10 years old, and as far as I am aware has no 'unusual' features. The noises have not always been there, and are definitely getting worse. They are very loud. We have a standard gas fired central heating system, with a cold water tank, a central heating header tank, and a hot water tank. The central heating has been switched off over the summer but the noise is still there.

It sounds like you have air trapped in the pipes. You could get a plumber to beed the system. I had this problem for a while, running some of the taps seemed to release it.... Hamish
Thank you Hamish - I was just about to post the same question as Stewart. The high pitched wail in our house is after using the cold water tap or flushing the toilet. The pitch is such that it hurts our ears - real torture!! You have reinforced what my husband thought - good to have a second opinion, though.

if its still happening then you need to check the ballvalve in your tanks in the roof, could be a water hammer.
