Why has compliance suddenly become such a huge industry? I've never come across it till recently and still understand little about it and who made it a requirement for so many companies?

I think it is just a new way of saying that you should follow the rules and legal requirements.

It looks quite sensible but it's only recent there was so much to do it needed an entire department. I'm concerned it now includes ESG which is little more than a political burden to force businesses to fit in with the current regime. I also saw compliance is a good area to look into for my new criminology qualification so I will also look into it.
