Since BT discontinued all land line service here my mobile is my only phone, so I keep it switched on 24/7. Does this shorten the life of the battery? Also, is it better to let it go almost flat before recharging it?

There is a school of thought that says you should not let your mobile's battery drain below 10% nor charge it more than 80%. There are even apps that will manage this:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digibites.accubattery

Have you not been switched to digital phone?

My mobile is swiched on 24/7 since its the only phone I have.

Never had any issues. Keep it charged up overnight and then as and when needed.

Where are you that BT has discontinued all landline services?

Are (as above) have you been switched to "Digital Voice" and (mistakenly) believe you no longer have a landline?

other schools of thought say that you should let it go low 10-15% but NOT zero and recharge to full and once it is 100% disconnect.

do not leave it empty

Life of a batt is the time ( years ) before it becomes unusable: wont charge wont retain charge, discharges too soon.

The engineer who told me the above ( 'you neednt talk to my husband: everyone finds him boring) didnt cover life of a batt

ANOTHER engineer said - oh you can leave on a charger at 100%. the internal circuits take care of overcharging etc

usual - that was then and this is now - stuff

My Samsung has a battery protection feature you can activate. This stops it charging at 85%.

I'm inclined to think Samsung know a bit about electronics.

I don't think I've ever turned my mobile phone off.  My previous phone was 8 years old and held the charge long enough to be practical

To New Judge and others, I live in Salisbury which was one of the first two locations where BT discontinued the old 'copper wires' exchange. My phone service was provided by Plus Net, so I was not swapped to VOIP via 'Digital Voice'. Plus Net do not provide a VOIP service at all, so now my mobile is my only phone.

You've never been to the Opera then Barry?  We had them checked at Glyndebourne before we could take our places.

But you must have been to the pictures?  Most annoying when someone's phone goes off especially when they then carry out a conversation.

Sorry to the OP I meant to also say Plusnet did the same to me.  So I just pay for my landline and then use my mobile for calls and texts which costs me only £6/month with giffgaff for unlimited messages and calls etc.

ladybirder, never been to the opeta and haven't been to the cinema since the shockingly bad Titanic.  The previous trip to the cinema was Towering Inferno.  I hate going to the cinema.

On flights the phone is in airplane mode.
