AI is a poor name, it should be PI (Psuedo). More processing power and storage means software can do more but it will never take careers that require actual intelligence.

Why middle class people specifically?

I've a feeling they're the ones most in danger of losing their jobs.  They're also the backbone of a stable society.

I disagree they are more at risk that other sections of society. Menial task workers are the easiest to be replaced by mechanised/computerised solutions.

 

No it isn't the end of civilization, but correctly handled could be the start of it. But benefits need to be equally shared, not result in ridiculously powerful elites grabbing everything and doing what they like with no regard to others.

Not sure about civilisation as a whole but Tuscany would take a hit.
