Very dull question, but how do I know which town is under which registry as far as probate goes? For example, if somebody died in Weymouth, Dorset, which Registry Office would I choose? I can't seem to find a list of them.

I would call the official government probate registry for advice

"For general enquiries please contact HMTCS Probate on 0300 303 0648 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, and Saturday 8am to 2pm or by email at: [email protected]"

I have just done Probate, if you do it on line, just submit it.  I then had to send the Will with a covering page to Chelmsford.

If you're searching for 'registry' office, then try 'register' office or 'registration' office, as that's the correct term.

Thank you, I will try the email address. Zacs-Master, it says registry office online. That is the term they are using on the website.

If you're searching for an existing grant of probate, rather than applying for probate, you can do so online (with no need to know which Probate Registry handled the paperwork):

This is actually for my genealogy! If I am searching for somebody's Will, there is often several people with the same name in the same year.

You used to be able to apply at any registry.  So it does not necessarily follow that someone who died in Dorset would have probate locally.  If you find their name in the indices, if you then look at the actual page, it should give their address.
