Average monthly cost of petrol now at £130 a month. As a retired couple this is now ridiculously excessive. Options? Stay in, walking not possible. Bus pass? Er no thanks.

You can't have it both ways, David. Complain about the cost of fuel and turn down the offer of free transport, albeit with limitations.

That's around 900 miles a month at 45mpg.

We have no public transport here out in the sticks.  I'm housebound still, so only short trips out for hubby to shops etc.

What's wrong with using your bus pass?

We've had our bus pass for years and used them once.  No buses unless we walk to the nearest town 2 miles away and I can hardly walk!

Limit the journeys you make?  Why not take advantage of free travel by bus?

I must admit we're spoiled with public transport. We live on the outskirts of Reading and have 8 buses an hour into town on weekdays. We also take full advantage of our concessionary bus passes at some P&R towns.

Lottie, I didn't mean you. I meant David.

I understand that you cannot get to the nearest bus stop.

What's wrong with a bus pass? Too far to bus stop. Very infrequent. Strange smelly drunks.... that's why they don't let me on:-)

Depends why walking isn't possible.

I have no transport and walk everywhere with a walker. Use my bus pass too.

Either cut back usage of car, and help the environment , or put up with prices. Your choice.

Motoring is still far too cheap, the masses can afford personal private transport and mostly they are transporting empty seats. Incredibly cheap if even WSS can afford a jam jar.

WSS and gobs on sticks, Jaaaaag man. x

Interesting chart here

https://www.racfoundation.org/data/uk-pump-prices-over-time

Prices in 2012 , around £1.40 per litre. Current price £1.55, but I generally pay under £1.50.

18 months ago it peaked at over £1.80 so it's fallen quite a bit since then.

I am resigned to the fact that our choice was to live in the sticks and I can't bear the thought now of moving to somewhere else away from being surrounded by others. We will use taxis if we have to.  It will be cheaper than using and maintaining a car.

I'm sure you have considered the various options and like me decided against getting a bike or an electric scooter!

I do admit to excessive journeying as we live in the sticks and I like to get out most days, but I am working on the idea of driving near to the bus stop and getting the bus more often. How about it?

To leave our house and get anywhere else I would have to negotiate a busy road.  I am trapped!

I can't drive any more.  I wish I could.
