The reason for the change of approach (and I agree about storms when we were kids) is the result of the advance of the Blame-and-claim Brigade (fueled by no-win-no-fee rogues) - they could well try suing Met if unwarned storm caused damage - that's yet another silly habit inherited from our highly litigious friends from across the pond.
