What is anyone's experience with owning a Great Dane? I'm thinking of getting one. I have had good experiences with German Shepherds and wondering how different it would be.

To me they are the best dogs in the world, apart from the droole, the passing of wind and the zoomies ( a mad 10 or 15 minutes every morning and night , where nothing or no one is safe ).
As for the gastric problem, you can buy a stand to raise the feeding bowl or as I do get a strong sturdy cardboard box and cut a hole in it so that the bowl sits in it.Then when it gets to dirty or soggy chuck it away.
The choice is yours but I wouldn't be without my two.

You also need bigger transport! Plus they can reach all the work surfaces in the kitchen, including the cooker!!! Everything is easily nose height!!!
A male Great Dane chasing a scent of a bitch in season is a frightening sight!! If you live in an area where people walk bitches in season (like me) and you get a male be prepared to be dragged around at top speed with their nose glued to the ground!!
And forget sitting on your settee!! Or getting near the fire!
Apart from all the above they are wonderful dogs and you certainly know you have one, the plus side is that you do not have to bend down to cuddle them!
