NOW my dears, no one mentioned genetics. An this bit concerned 2oth cent genetics - ( 19 C Mendel did yellow and red  peas etc)  - a normally formed leg ( OK two normal paws) but in the wrong place.

Mendel he  no did anything like that - First noticed with a fly - and a normal leg sticking out  of its head.

So something says (a gene geddit)  - put it in the right place, and something else ( series of other genes geddit) then form the normal leg

and so boy and gurlz - homoeobox genes were born (*)

Now the first scene in "get carter" - pub, has a five fingered man er fingering a pint ( he has a thumb also), er drinking his pint. famous he is apparently. as pub extra

five fingers instead of four -  and the geneticists just sort of said, "there is someting that says do it four times, and this one has said, five" - and sort of went back to their coffee. So it was well known but excited little interest

In the first shot in the long bar, the second local man to stare at Jack Carter, actually has five fingers, and a thumb (an extra finger). This was a genuine abnormality of the 'extra' that played the part. It can be seen as he raises his glass of beer to drink.
