2. the epiglottis is a flap over the glottis, which is the opening of the larynx , or entrance to the windpipe. This flap stops food & drink going into the windpipe.
The bolus is the name given to the ball of food that results from the initial action of the saliva and the mechanical action of chewing. When it passes into the back of the mouth, more particularly the pharynx, it triggers the involuntary swallowing reflex that prevents the food entering the lungs.
