A push would be welcomed. I have answered all clues and filled grid. I have also identified the description of the three competitors from the extra words. Where I am struggling is to identify the event from the extra words in the last 18 clues ( numbers 19-36). Clues or other insight to help me over this blockage would be much appreciated.

Sorry, misunderstood. First part, three words, 5, 9 and 4. The 4 letter is word meaning three, as in number of competitors. Middle word is another word for a type of dramatist.

All done and understood but can't find last 5 to highlight. I know what I'm looking for..but it's not there. Is it symmetrical?

I'm in the same position as Cillagoose with the 5-letter word.

I've even looked for a 6-letter word intersecting with one of the others making up the 27 cells, but no joy.

Have you replaced the descriptions of the three characters with their matching competitors? Once this is done the name appears vertically in the 4 th column from the right. The name is the wife of Jason in Greek mythology.
