This is a shock to me, he has kept me company and entertained me over the years.

He still sounded youthful although he was 69. I think he had struggled with weight issues for a long time but seemed to have got on top of that. His long running afternoon show was company, comfort and amusement, for millions daily for decades. Incredibly Steve Wright in the Afternoon started in 1981. The characters and silly sketches were unmissable. Sid The Manager and Barry from Watford have also left us for ever. R.I.P Wrighty.
Barry at 17.41 - continuing a prerecorded weekend show when he had been live on air for five afternoons a week hardly seems like a good use of the amazing talent the BBC are suddenly so keen to tell us Mr Wright was.
He was sacked in the BBC's bizarre obsession with a 'younger audience' which is failing on a daily basis.
The BBC is as hypocritical as it is deluded.
i agree with andy, /He was sacked in the BBC's bizarre obsession with a 'younger audience/ i used to many years ago listen to radio 1 in work, i heard it slowly go down hill, dropping dj's for younger ones, 70's 80's had some great dj's who could tap in to there listeners, you felt they knew you like an old friend, now it's just junk food radio..who is that dj...no idea.
fender - the answer is that they are not djs - they are z list celebs who are given a script and have to ask inane questions about what people are having for dinner (remind you of anywhere else) or what you wore to a fancy dress party. For example Rob Beckett - I have to turn over when he comes on, his inane wittering drives me to distraction. The only Radio 2 DJ I listen to now is Tony Blackburn - at least he plays decent music even if his humour is sometimes buttock clenching.
