suprise 40th party

I am planning a suprise 40th party. I plan to have a band/disco for the main part of the evening but I would like to start it off with something to mark the evening eg people telling stories about the victim(oops, birthday boy). Anyone got any idea what we could do at the start before everyone goes off and props the bar up for the rest of the night?

A slideshow with old pics and peeps accounts of how they met/ funny times etc of victim ?

That was great at my nephews 18 a background screen with old clips on. Also we had various stories or accalades that family and friends remembered put up on the walls for people to read.

you could do a 'This is your Life' type thing with amusing anecdotes and bring on guests to tell their funnies about the person.
