Are The West In The Grip Of The Woke...

I may have missed an existing thread. Apologies if I have but the search yields nothing.
I thought this was a gentle solve; the clues were fairly straightforward, all being 'normal'. I liked the link of themes. I found one of the pair of surnames more difficult to find than any of the others.
Many thanks, Colleague. An enjoyable puzzle.

Yes, I had to do some head-scratching on the theme, and one red herring in particular sent me on a long wild goose chase. I too found that last name difficult to find. Online sources appear to differ.
But it's an achievement to fit it all into the grid, and I enjoyed the challenge. Thanks, Colleague!
Limped over the finish with this one - and needed some encouragement from the other side. Didn't enjoy it too much: the endgame seemed needlessly obscure especially as one of the statements exists in several different versions involving a range of different personnel depending on where you look. Definitely an example of GWIT for me. Sorry Colleague
I found this quite straightforward but I think luck was on my side. A fairly straightforward gridfill. I found the long name first and immediately thought of its more common form. That plus the title gave me an idea as to what might be going on. I quickly found the other two names of the trio and thence their statement. I'd already spotted another possible name in the grid so Googled it together with the last few words of the first statement. Pretty much the first hit that Google returned confirmed it, giving me the second name and the second statement. From there it wasn't too hard to think of how they may be represented thematically in the grid. I'd actually spent most time looking for an obvious second name for the trio. I usually hate grid-searches but didn't really need one on this occasion.
