I have them on a new Document, but on any saved Documents, there are no Tool Bars visible.

There is nothing to click on to bring a menu to change anything - can anyone advise what I have done, and how to fix it?

Thanks.

A-H, I'm not at all techie... is the Toolbar the thing with the different fonts, typesizes, option to italicise etc? If so, that looks to have disappeared on my saved documents, but if I hover over the 'Home', the stuff all reappars....

Thanks Chris, but no, there is nothing at all to click on that works.

there is an elipsis, but when i click on it, it doesn't access anything i can click on to change anything.

^^^ Try pressing Ctrl and F1 together.

Nothing happens!

Check that the family haven't taped a photo of a document to the screen for a laugh.

view > toolbars

Question Author

bhg - 'view' is not visible.

These files are all stored on a hard drive - my Word system on my computer works fine, it's just these files that are showing with nothing there.

Question Author

Tried re-boot, still the same.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Try right-clicking on one of the files and selecting 'Properties' and then 'Security'.  Under 'Permissions', check that 'Full control' has a tick next to it.  (If the document has somehow become 'Read only', it might explain why you're not seeing any toolbars).

^^^ Crossed posts with TW.

His suggestion looks useful (and also relies on Word only wanting to read the document, rather than editing it).

Question Author

Pressing 'Esc' fixed the problem.

Thanks all, much appreciated.
