In the 1940s my parents were living in a room in Paddington.  Papa returned home from the pub having bought a Contax camera (a pre war rival to the Leica) and a pistol.

Mama was pregnant with me at the time and when the weapon was accidentally discharged the round missed us both by inches, lodging in the arm of a sofa.

Each gave me seperate accounts of the gun. Papa said he once had one, mama mentioned how it had gone off accidentally.

I've no reason to doubt their stories.  That might make an interesting opening but most of the rest of my days were pretty dull.
