What were they called before someone came up with 'logistics'?  Haulage, delivery service?

Thanks, bhg.  I was puzzled when I first noticed it, probably early 80s.  I thought it was something to do with computers. I was wrong, I hadn't worked out the logistics of it.

barry - yes, it confused me as well. Even the army changed from transport to logistics towards the end of the century. I can't see where logic comes into it.

I thought it was around the WW2. Kinda the German invasion of Russia was a logistical nightmare - -  or as TTT might say " loggy-loo foo!"

logistikos is used in Ancient Greek - the mods knew i was gonna write that . Engineers have always used it a lot - some instances from 1800s

It's way more than "transport"...and it hasn't got the same root as "logic".

Bit of an oxo-cube there. Why do classists insist on giving 10 instances of the use of a word?

practised in calculating, Pl.Tht.145a, - fr'instance means

Liddle and Scott ( think Alice) think logistikos means practised in calculating. and so.... you go along to Pl.Tht.145a

Plato, Theaetetus, para 145 part a- - - - -

and read: Σωκράτης. ἦ καὶ ἀστρονομικὸς καὶ λογιστικός τε καὶ ( and both the law of the stars and calculation...)

and then you kinda go back to your coffee and crossword

saying logistics does NOT come from a word logistikos in ancient Greek is a bit of a stretch to me

First use

An army savant ( tommy know all) said of the Russian offensive:

Gen Pershing (*) said the infantry win battles but logistics win wars

(*) and little surprise then had to explain who Pershing was. US army commander who President Wilson was adamant should NOT be under the command of the Allied commanders.

Imperial commanders in the Reichstag commented : as long as they stay apart, we cannot lose the war !
