Software Distribution Service - help!!!

I've accidentally allowed Automatic Updates on my laptop - I'm not usually so careless. The result is that I've got something called Software Distribution Service 2.0. It is causing my laptop to crash completely, and I've lost a lot of functionality. This is serious - can anyone help?
And how do you switch off Automatic Updates, please?

If you are using XP it is fairly easy

START-CONTROL PANEL

SECURITY CENTRE-TURN OFF UPDATES
