......starting at 4 pm in the villages of Saddleworth and Tameside. We'll be going to Greenfield, which is great for viewing. Give it a go if you live fairly local. All the top bands are taking part. There's lots of activity. Villages such as Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross, Denshaw, Greenacres, Roundhay, Scouthead, Grotton, Lydgate, Diggle are amongst the Saddleworth ones. Then places such as Broadoak and Mossley in Tameside. It's all free and it's a great British tradition. Give it a go folks!

I lived in Delph for 10 years, loved the Whit Friday band contest. Two mounted police horses led the bands down King Street and they trotted and danced in time to the bands.

Is this to do with Wakes Week?

Yes, sandy.

Hang on, I may be misleading you.  It's to do with the Whit walks.  I'm trying to remember when Wakes week was in Calderdale - there was one in early Sept. (potato harvesting) and I think the other was at Whit.  Perhaps someone curently living locally will know.

Here in Middleton, wakes week was always in June. I think that coincided with lots of others, hence the mass exodus to Blackpool for 2 weeks. But this is the Whit Friday Band Contest. The mounted police made only a very brief appearance. We saw Fairey band, Brighouse, Hepworth and Black Dyke, who are the reigning British Champions and paraded the trophy on their march. The one you see in Brassed Off. But by far the most popular brand was Chav Brass. Loads of fun. Twas a really good night that you missed!
