Can anyone explain this? Virgin went down so I lost my internet. At the same time my mobile service went down, Smarty (Three network). Both came back on at more or less the same time.

That sounds like a simple power outage, which affected both the local Virgin Media connections and your local Three mast. Given the thunderstorms we've had today, quite a few areas might have experienced similar problems.
