I've only heard its name in American movies (as in the weird Netflix series, Eric  in which Benedict Cumberbatch makes & later mentions it).

Curious, I looked it up and tried to make it for myself, the result ? - an absolutely revolting mess!

Where did I go wrong ? Has anyone ever made it?

I can't abide brioche or any sweetened bread in savoury dishes. Keep burgers out of brioche!

pasta; That's interesting; I knew the French wouldn't have anything to do with it. For one thing their bread never was that shape or sliced, it's obviously an American idea.

jourdain; yes you sometimes have to use a but of cunning with kids.

When our son was a student he went through the usual 'vegetarian phase'.  My wife was concerned that he wasn't getting sufficient nutrition, so whenever he came home she made him some 'vegetable soup' but omitted to tell him she had used a marrow-bone in it.

He used to say it was the best soup he'd ever had and wanted the recipe, but could never make it as good as hers.  😀

Khandro...some early versions in this country were soaked in wine. That sounds less than pleasant to me.

oddly, we never think of it as a breakfast food, more a snack or light tea

Khandro says " it's obviously an American idea", except a quick look at the link provided shows that it is actually Roman and then adopted by the Brits a 100 years before it was mentioned in America.

All America did was name it.

Eggy Bread. I sometimes roll it in sugar and cinnamon. Then it's doughnut bread
