Couple of friends called this week and both of course had their smart phones with them.

I don't have any but I was wondering is there a watch I can buy just to count the steps alone.

You only need a very cheap pedometer for this. Don't complicate your life

LOL - as it is already complicated Barry - did think I had a wee pedometer years ago but sure the notion wore off me again.

Most pedometers don't come as watches. e.g. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/onwalk-one-plus-pedometer-accelerometer/_/R-p-343667?mc=8772442

However there are certainly watch-type variants available.  e,g.

[NB: Be careful to avoid devices labelled as 'smart', as they're usually designed to work alongside smartphones.  The devices in my two links work on their own].

The pedometer you wear on your waistband is good enough, you are not in training for the Olympics

I don't like the watch types, they count folding the laundry as steps

^^^ If they count lifting a pint glass as well, Barry, I think that I might buy one 🍺 😏

You will walk 500 miles...
