you'll need to check your local laws, jj, and then look at the signs on each bus lane. They have many different rules in different places

Barry, near where I live there used to be road with a lane that cars with 2+ passengers could use.

The rules in Northern Ireland (where JJ lives) are generally different from those in the rest of the UK.  In NI (quote), "The legislation for most bus lanes allows permitted taxis, motorcycles and bicycles to use bus lanes".
