Happy Birthday Cash Machine

First one went into operation this day in 1967 and needed a six digit PIN.

They were a godsend when banks had very restricted opening hours and you couldn't get cashback from the supermarket.

I rarely use them now.  When was the last time you used the 'hole in the wall'?

I used one today for the first time for ages. The old Saturday trick to get cash was to buy something by cheque in m&s and then return it for a cash refund!

As an aside, what would you give a cash machine for it's 57th birthday? It must be fed up of receiving cash. 😊

You must be using the wrong ATMs Barry. I've never had one glare at me, they're usually quite friendly.

I hardly ever use one now. I hope the bank leaves an ATM when it closes its doors for the final time in my local town, unless my window cleaner and gardener both get card payment machines

banks are as rare as hen's teeth now - and the hub idea doesnt really work yet

TM - fren' used one to lend money to a man we both  knew. He half-inched the  keys and went off with the car !

video ( lots of it!) refuted the authorities' disbelief.

( just think: no ATM - no mate, aint got no lu-lu!)

To be pedantic, it has to be a Barclay's ATM in order for it to be called 'a hole in the wall'.  That's because they've registered that term as one of their trademarks.  (That's one of the many bits of  trivia that I bore people to death with when I'm leanig on a bar in licensed premises!)

I've used an ATM just once so far this year, as I generally refuse to patronise any business which doesn't accept card payments.

oh about twice a week - like when I need my cash cos I love my cash.  when I use my card I lose perspective of how much I spend so love the oul cash.

I remember the days before plastic cards, when Barclays cash machines needed punched cards to operate them.  Each card was 'single use only', with the machine dispensing £10 every time you put one in.  (If you wanted to withdraw £50, you had to make five separate £10 withdrawals while a massive queue of people built up behind you to use the machine).

Barclays sent out just five punched cards at a time.  Once they'd all been used up, one had to post the request slip (which came with the five cards) back to Barclays to order some more punched cards.  In practice, because of postal delays, it was best to send that slip off as soon as one had received it (i.e. even before any of the punched cards had been used).
