This July will mark 50 years since Northern Cyprus was invaded by the Turks. I have never been to the North side and I am not sure I ever could. Some say it's the most beautiful part.

Have you ever been, and do you think more action should have been taken at the time to eject the invaders?

It's a shame no one else had any thoughts on this matter but thanks anyway.

Why didn't the bubbles kick the captains out then?

Curly - I have been to N Cyprus a couple of times.  It is very beautiful and very different from the South.  Not so commercialised and touristy.  I found everyone very kind and helpful.  But this was a while ago - I think the last time I was there was about 5 years ago.  Give it a try when you can .

A N Ireland politican with an eye to a quick buck worked for what passes for the government in the north.

He promoted the sale of homes and land in the Turkish sector.  Many of these were owned by Greek Cypriots who were either murdered or exiled.

If Turkey ever gets close to joining the EU they'll have to deal  with the problems created by their client state.

I went to Northern Cyprus many years ago and it was lovely, little villages and towns with local rustic restaurants.

Revisted a couple of years ago when in Southern Cyprus and was very disappointed, the little town had grown into a big town and I felt that I could be anywhere.  The Harbour at Kyrenia with all the restaurants had not changed much but the main town was now very touristy.

Oh wow, thanks for the answers.

Rosie, something about the injustice of it all stops me going to the Turkish North. I suppose part of it is because we have Greek Cypriot friends. Undoubtedly I am missing something spectacular on that part of the island but my conscience and my allegiance to my Greek Cypriot friends just won't permit me to go. I still, rightly or wrongly, consider it "occupied".
