According to the Trussel Trust, in 2010 (under a Labour government) the number of emergency food parcels distributed by food banks was 41,000 per year.

 

By last year (under 14 years of Tory rule) that figure had risen to 2,400,000 – or just under a 6,000% increase.

Deprived children (most likely to use food banks) have a higher rate of obesity.

I'm prepared to bet the number of  'emergency' food parcels will continue to increase. If you make them available people will use them. You could increase the numbers by 25% almost overnight if you opened 25% more up or loosened the eligibilty criteria.

If they'd been around in the 1950s the need (relative to the population) would have been even higher, although I think pride would have stopped a fair number using them in the 1950s

I think you are right. People would have economised in other areas to ensure they put food on the table. Now food banks have become commonplace there is no stigma attached so they will spend freely on phones/IT/smokes/beer knowing they won't go hungry.
