I was buying an item in the grocers this morning which was marked reduced by 25%. The original price was £2.80.

The lady went to the calculator on her phone to do the maths.

I told her the answer and when she'd checked she said you're right.

Do the schools not teach mental arithmetic any more?

I've been out for dinner with much older, intelligent people and they couldn't work out a 10% tip.

Yes, I know 10% tip is a bit tight, but that's a whole other conversation.

On the contrary, it's probably average for those who feel they need to pay extra over and above the agreed rate to someone who already earns a wage for what they do. I, for one, didn't get tipped in my job.

Uneducated? Or simply using the tools of her trade in a modern world.

A receptionist asks her customer for his mobile number and OMG he doesn't know it, nor does he know how to find it on his phone. I'm sure she is polite and patient, she doesn't consider him to be stupid or uneducated, just old!

I had a very good education but I will freely admit my mental arithmetic is dire. I just do not use it very much. When I worked in a pub (before the days of smart tills) it was no problem, but now it is rusty. The calculations I need to do these days I can do and I can easily write an excel formula for repeat calculations when figures may change and can do some quite complicated IHT grossing up calcs, for which I can also write a formula  

In your example, I'd not be so quick, but I'd get there. But I am happy to accept the label of uneducated if that is how you choose to judge me.
