an apple, a potato, and an onion, and asked which is the odd one out, what would you say?

I'd go for potato because it originated in the Americas.

I believe this was part of the entrance exam to an Oxbridge university, and there's no right answer.

From Wikipedia

The plant develops tubers to store nutrients. These are not roots but stems that form from thickened rhizomes at the tips of long thin stolons.

Are going to get it correct on your third guess Hopkirk and go for apple.

I would say onion . Because apples and potatoes don't make me cry when peeling them.

Apple!

Yeah! 🎈🌟🎉🍰

Question Author

Onion isn't a bad answer.  You could make alcohol from the other two.

you can make booze out of onions two, in fact any plant material. Apple is the only sensible answer in the absence of further parameters.

If there's no correct answer then I don't see how it matters which one you choose

Question Author

It's not which one you pick, it's about showing off and displaying your ability to think on your feet.

Well then I'd say 'apple' as the other 2 are vegetables and an apple is a fruit, simple!
