Anyone else got this and can tell me what to do please?

It says Microsoft will no longer support 3rd party email and calendar apps. You need to upgrade to your 3rd party mail which supports modern authentication methods

I got it also, and tbh the email made no sense to me whatsoever. Maybe I'm thick...🤔

What's 3rd party mail?

Question Author

Pasta I must be toas I  don't really understand what I have to do. It said no longer be able to use 3rd party mail like hotmail I do have a hotmail email address

'3rd party email and calendar apps' include programs such as Thunderbird, which are alternatives to Microsoft Outlook for managing your email, etc.

Some older vesions of such software allow you to access your email account solely by entering your email address and password.  However organisations are now expected to use '2FA' (= '2 factor authentication') to allow their customers to access their personal data.  (e.g. when you try to log into a service online, an authorisation code might be sent to your mobile phone, so that you can then enter it onto your computer screen).

Microsoft is now changing the way that people can access Hotmail and Outlook.com accounts, so that they can no longer be accessed via software that only uses 'address + password', rather than '2FA'.

(Google is doing the same for GMail accounts).

So anyone who's using, say, an older version of Thunderbird (which doesn't support '2FA'), will need to update that software in order to be able to access their email account.

If you're using Outlook software to access your email (or going to the Outlook.com website), you shouldn't need to do anything at all, except possibly to ensure that '2FA' is enabled in your account:

I must be thick so if I do nothing will I no longer get my Hotmail emails? My sister said her Hotmail just changed to outlook she did nothing.

^^^ You've not told us how you access your Hotmail account.

If it's via the Outlook.com website, nothing will change.  If it's using the Outlook software on your computer, there should also be no change.

It's only if you're using a third-party program, such as Thunderbird, to access your mail account that you might need to update something.

I just get emails through the mail app on my iPad and phone. Also same on laptop.

Question Author

I'm still getting my emails through the mail app. I got email today that I have posted above about what I have to do before 16 sept or will no longer get my Hotmail emails.

If you find that you can no longer access your Hotmail account on your iPhone or iPad via the default app, simply install Outlook instead:
