Just bought a 128GB 3.0 usb stick, but on my computer is says its only 114GB free.

I formatted it thinking it might restore the other 14GB but it remains 114GB.

Surely I am being denied 14GB's

Any ideas?

Overall I tend to think if a product is billed as 128gb, that's exactly the amount of usable space you should get, otherwise its false marketing.

End of the day it's just a way to con you into thinking your getting more than you are.

lets take a 32 bit machine for simplicity. 64 bits,

and square it.....

do you have any idea the difficulties I have explaining vacccines under 1 yr of age on AB ?

17:20 no it's not, a typically ignorant statement. It holds 128gb, some of it is needed by the system.

17:24 go and play with the traffic sunshine, I have no idea what you are talking about. No one mentioned squaring anything. I said "powers of 2" not "to the power of 2".

While many consider it a buyer's market, my explanation for the significant disparity is that it is a seller's market. Due to the high demand for flash drives, sellers have the advantage and can maximize sales by rounding up (what we may call false advertising) when marketing. When transparency is requested, at present, they only offer explanations. https://www.logotech.com/blog/post/actual-USB-drive-storage-capacity

"that's exactly the amount of usable space you should get"

You do. Then when formatted you've used some of that already. If you have a programme that can write directly on an unformatted drive and read it back, then you can use the lot for data. But the vast majority of folk need it as standard.
