Is there a reasonable price hotel somewhere on the rail link between the airport and the city centre & would you recommend using a travel card to get about? We are going for four nights.

Schipol Airport is so close to the city centre (approx 15 to 20 mins by train) that there's probably not much advantage in looking for a hotel at the midway point; you might just as well look for a central hotel.  However the well-reviewed Hotel Artemis might meet your requirements, although the best way to get there fron Schipol is by bus (service 369 to  Antwerpenbaan), rather than by train, followed by a walk of around half a mile:

Amsterdam's city centre is surprisingly small.  You can easily walk between most of the main tourist attractions.
