Was it when school league tables were introduced? If so, was it a good idea?

I think it was when competition between schools was brought in, and local authorities could no longer run a sensible system of education provision.

Perhaps the competition between schools was a bad idea. When children went to their nearest school with friends in their area, they seemed to mix and blend together with friends of different abilities a lot better than they do now. 

The child still has to live in the catchment area, with very few exceptions
